Behaviour in the Wild
Our work is centralised around coastal species and includes both the bottlenose and humpback dolphins who are sighted throughout the year in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. Our primary avenues of interest is recording and cataloguing the local Dolphins of Ponta and this was initiated by founders of wild dolphin encountours in Mozambique during the 1990's.
This mornings session found us having two sightings. Rocha was sighted with her newbie in the company of Rosie and some other females and Babes first up. They were not keen for any interaction so we headed north in search both others which proved fruitless…After a snorkel on some reef, two fins were spotted slightly offshore and soon we found ourselves in the company of Rocha who has now broken away from the large pod with her babe. #dolphinsofponta #dolphinencountoursresearchcenter #pontadoouro #dolphincare #marineprotectedarea
As we headed into Malongane Bay this morning we spotted a small group of 3 dolphins. Mom, babe and one other were after some salad fish and the hunt was on! Shortly after Dallas, camera in hand spotted another pod approaching from the north. Slipping in we were welcomed by a bounty of echolocating as our local #dolphinsofponta, two moms, a sub-adult female and a bunch of kids spent time 'checking' us out, he he....
